my brilliant morning

my morning has been like this:

me: "it's been a good morning. i got up early, had breakfast, worked on my sunday school lesson, and now i'm getting ready for a shower. i think i'll watch a movie after this."

The Spirit: "you should go to the temple."

me: "what?"

The Spirit: "go to the temple."

me: "but i was going to watch a movie..."

The Spirit: "go to the temple."

me: "i wanted to watch a movie."

The Spirit: "go to the temple."

me: "yeah, but..."

The Spirit: "go to the temple."

me: "i should go to the temple today."

wearing a towel and with shaving cream still on my face, i check the temple schedule on-line because i remember hearing something at church about the provo temple being closed for a while. it closes on june 21. i'm good.

smelling like irish spring and getting dressed, i get a text message from a friend, asking if i want to do anything and i can't find my amazing red bow tie, but nothing is going to get in my way. as i pick up my wallet i decide to check my recommend.
it expired in april.
i am crestfallen.

Total sadness! I have had a similar conversation with the spirit like that, however mine lasted for 45 minutes before I came to my senses.

Mine expired in April too.
After discussing this through all of April and most of May with my uber-busy, shiny new bishop, I snagged his counselor and the new stake counselor and got the job done.

Once, my recommend was going to expire, so I called our ward's executive secretary and left a message to make an appt with the bishop. He didn't call back, and I was panicking, because I didn't want to be without a recommend (I later learned he was waiting to get my membership records, which were needed to renew the recommend). Then I felt kind of silly for making such a big deal over the potentially expired recommend. He worked it out so I could get it renewed. And then we got married and lived happily ever after.
CTR: current temple recommend.

So, did you chance to read the Ensigh article about this very thing this month?

Probably the Spirit wanted you to know your recommend had expired. Sometimes things happen that way. One time the Spirit said for me to go to the Temple to do baptisms, but it was a Saturday morning and they were too busy for me, so I went on a drive and ended up at Provo cemetery. And thus I was reminded of why genealogy work is so important. So, I'm sorry you missed out, but Yea for the Spirit being sneaky sometimes. =]

this morning while on the bus to work, i was reading the screwtape letters, and screwtape is advising his devil nephew regarding the man he is tempting:

"the great thing is to prevent his doing anything. as long as he does not convert it into action, it does not matter how much he thinks about this new repentance. let the little brute wallow in it. let him, if he has any bent that way, write a book about it; that is often an excellent way of sterilising the seeds which the enemy plants in a human soul. let him do anything but act...as one of the humans once said, active habits are strengthened by repetition but passive ones are weakened. the more often he feels without acting, the less he will be able ever to act, and, in the long run, the less he will be able to feel..."

so even though you didn't have your recommend up to date, you were willing to act on it, enough to leave without your fabulous red bowtie, forgo the movie and head out the door! and that small act is a triumph. next time i'm sure you'll have your recommend up-to-date...that would really make screwtape mad. : )

I'm sorry, Jeff. That stinks. I've had that happen to me as well.

So. . .

What movie did you end up watching? :)
